Imphal, October 28 2015:
IGAR(S) honoured the martyr and paid last respects to the Rifleman Paokholet Baite of 24 Assam Rifles on October 27 in Moreh.
In the true spirit of the Assam Rifles, the brave soldier laid down his life fighting the insurgents who are bent upon causing disharmony and disturbance, said a press note from IGAR (S) .
When troops of 24 Assam Rifles patrolling the area between Kwatha and Satang on 25 October came under heavy fire, Rifleman Paokholet Baite leading the patrol took the brunt of the fire on his body to save his comrades.
The brave soldier kept firing on the insurgents despite being hit by multiple gunshots forcing the "Anti-National Elements" to flee in haste.
This gave opportunity to the other soldiers to take tactical positions preventing further casualties and "denting the morale of the UGs" .
There were no injuries to any of the Assam Rifles troops because of the instant counter action.
Inputs from reliable sources also indicate that some of the UGs were grievously injured during this counter action and have been evacuated to a hospital in Tamu.
Later during the search of the area, 24 Assam Rifles recovered one 9 mm Pistol, one Handheld Radio Set and four IEDs, thus foiling the plans of the UGs and forcing them to flee without their assorted arms and ammunition, said the press release.
The Funeral Service for Rifleman Paokholet Baite took place in Moreh in the presence of IG Assam Rifles (South), Commander 26 Sect AR, Addl SP Chandel, Ex-Servicemen, Vaiphei Community leaders and serving officers of Assam Rifles.
They paid their last respects to this brave son of the soil and consoled the grieving family.
Wreaths were laid and messages were conveyed on behalf of GOC-in-C Eastern Command, DG Assam Rifles and GOC 3 Corps.
IG Assam Rifles (South) while addressing the martyr's family and relatives appreciated the brave act of Rifleman Paokholet Baite and assured them of all assistance to the dependents and children.
During his condolence message, IG Assam Rifles (South) affirmed that though the loss to the family is irreparable, the Assam Rifles fraternity would take care of the martyr's family as their own.
