CAU, Imphal 26th in IIRF 2025; MU slips to 40th

Two Central universities from Manipur featured in the top 50 of the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025, highlighting contrasting trends in the state's higher education landscape.
The Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal climbed five spots to 26th rank this year, while Manipur University dropped to 40th position from last year's 35th rank.
According to the rankings released recently, CAU bagged the 26th position among all Central Universities in India with an overall index score of 939.04 .
The university's performance was robust across key evaluation parameters including teaching resources (211.7), research strength (182.8), and industry integration (157.8) .
Notably, its placement performance score of 229.6 indicated a strong institutional focus on aligning education with employment opportunities and sectoral demands, particularly in agri-based industries.
Manipur University, Canchipur went down to the 40th rank by securing a score of 910.25 .
The 2025 edition of IIRF's rankings highlighted a significant presence of Central universities from the Northeast, withlO institutions from the region making it to the top 50.Rajiv Gandhi University in Arunachal Pradesh achieved the highest rank among them at 13th, followed by Tezpur University and Mizoram University at 24th and 25th, respectively.
Other notable entries include North Eastern Hill University (29th), Nagaland University (34th), Sikkim University (36th), Assam University (37th), and Tripura University (44th) .
At the national level, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi once again claimed the top spot with a near-perfect score of 994.89, followed by Delhi University (993.86), Banaras Hindu University (992.35), Jamia Millia Islamia (990.48) and University of Hyderabad (988.93) .
These institutions continue to lead in areas like academic output, research impact, global outlook, and pedagogical innovation.
The IIRF rankings are known for evaluating composite institutional performance using a weighted matrix of indicators such as Placement Performance, Teaching-Learning Resource & Pedagogy (TLRP), Research Strength, Industry Income, Placement Strategy, Future Orientation, and External Perception & International Outlook (EPIO), For Manipur and other north-eastern states that have historically grappled with infrastructural gaps and limited policy attention, the strong showing in IIRF 2025 reflects significant progress in higher education planning and delivery, though the drop in the position of Manipur University suggests the need for bringing significant improvement in its performance.
