Herbert School hosts orientation programme on 'Mathematical Thinking & Career Opportunities'

A Career Orientation Programme on "Mathematical Thinking and Career Opportunities in Mathematics" for Class XII students was conducted successfully today at Herbert School, Imphal.
The programme aimed to create awareness among students about the wide range of career opportunities in Mathematics and related fields, and to promote logical reasoning and analytical problem-solving skills through mathematical thinking.
Prof Shanta Laishram of the Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi, attended as the resource person.
The session began with a brief introduction to Prof Shanta, followed by a welcome address in the presence of the Principal, teachers, and students.
In his keynote, Prof Shanta emphasized the significance of Mathematics in everyday life.
He said Mathematics trains the mind to think logically and make rational decisions.
Through interactive demonstrations, he showed students how mathematical thinking can be applied to solve complex real-life problems.
He also guided students on preparing for a career as a mathematician, stating that patience and a willingness to learn continuously are the two most important qualities.
He highlighted various reputed institutions in India offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Mathematics and allied disciplines.
Prof Shanta further elaborated on diverse career paths for Mathematics graduates.
He noted opportunities in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Technology, pharmaceuticals, chemical and gas industries, financial services, and research laboratories of multinational companies.
Sharing his personal journey, he said he studied at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Thoubal, completed B.Sc (Hons) in Mathematics from DM College of Science, Imphal, and later joined TIFR as a Research Scholar for his PhD.
He encouraged students to pursue their goals with dedication and perseverance.
The students participated with enthusiasm and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks.
