COCOMI pitches for relief efforts, damage surveys

Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) continues its flood relief activities at different localities in Imphal East district affected by flood with priority on saving lives of humans and animals, distribution of essential items and materials and immediate medical assistance.
According to a COCOMI statement, alternative arrangement for 17 inmates of Senior Citizen's Home, Kongba Nongthombam Leikai, who were found sheltering at makeshift Kongba bazar relief camp, have been brought to Khuman Lampak Youth Hostel, where they will be sheltered till the situation improves.
While informing public that relief materials distributed by the committee to flood victims were made possible with financial and material contributions from individuals, women vendors of Khwairamband Keithel, business community and shop owners of Imphal city, the COCOMI said a survey is being carried out to reach out to inaccessible flooded areas like Ayangpalli, Thongju, Bashikhong and Kyamgei.
COCOMI appealed to clubs and organisations of such areas to contact committee's helpline numbers 9863738741/9366813406/9612318445.Making fervent appeal to departments concerned, the COCOMI said a detailed report of flooded areas be prepared through DC/SDO/SDC concerned and update the same at the public domain.
It also appealed to departments concerned to find out reasons for flooding at certain areas even after cessation of rainfall and take up necessary steps on a war- footing to drain out the floodwaters.
The COCOMI also strongly called for taking up post-flood measures so that flood affected people do not suffer from water borne diseases.
It also said that proper field survey is necessary to assess damages done by flood including houses, private properties and farms so that flood victims get adequate compensation and rehabilitation.
While appealing to staff of departments concerned to work proactively to provide humanitarian aid to people stuck in flooded area, the COCOMI said its volunteers are ready extend help to the department.
More than 100 COCOMI volunteers are actively involved in flood relief opera tions since June 1, distributing food and essential items to more than 1,500 flood-affected people in different areas on Friday alone.
Different teams of COCOMI have so far distributed relief materials at 16 relief camps opened in Imphal East district particularly in Khurai and Wangkhei assembly constituencies.
The COCOMI also conducted its first-ever free medical camp for the flood-affected people of Khurai Sajor Leikai on Friday at Ima Nongmaileima Shanglen, benefitting around 110 locals.
