Imphal, March 12 2024:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has recommended five probable candidates for Inner and Outer Manipur parliamentary constituencies for the Lok Sabha elections likely to be held in either April or May this year.
Former Ukhrul MLA Alfred Kanngam Arthur, being the lone applicant from Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency, is poised for clearance by the AICC.
As for Inner Manipur seat, MPCC has shortlisted four probable candidates.
MPCC president K Meghachandra told some media persons on Tuesday that four persons applied for INC ticket for Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
They are incumbent MPCC vice president Hareshwar Goswami, retired IAS officer Abujam Tombikanta, MPCC spokesperson and advocate Ningombam Bhupenda and associate professor of JNU Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.
All of them have been recommended after thorough discussion by MPCC election committee with a list submitted to the AICC, he said adding that AICC will soon announce candidates for both the parliamentary constituencies of Manipur after survey and screening.
On the other hand, former MLA Alfred, being the only applicant for the INC ticket to contest in Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency is certain to be allotted the party ticket, Meghachandra expressed.
A reliable source informed that INC candidate for Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency is very much likely to choose from either Hareshwar Goswami or Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam but latter's probability is very high.
According to K Meghachandra, thousands of people displaced by the ethnic violence since May 3, 2023 are unable to return to their ancestral homes.
In view of the present unrest situation in the state, many civil society organisations are against holding election and accordingly Congress party is yet to begin the campaign.
Apart from this, Congressparty considers suffering of the people and resolving the violence more important than election, he said while reiterating that the party is yet to begin preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
On the other hand, AICC released second list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha election on Tuesday.
Among the 43 candidates named in the list include former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath's son Nakul Nath in Chhindwara constituency while former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot s son Vaibhav Gehlot will contest from Jalore.
Further, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who won the Kaliabor seat in the 2014 elections, is set to contest from Jorhat in Assam.
Rahul Kaswan, who switched over from the BJP a few days ago, has been fielded from Churu in Rajasthan.
The second candidates' list includes 12 from Assam, 10 from Madhya Pradesh, 10 from Rajasthan, seven from Gujarat and three from Uttarakhand, besides one from Daman and Diu.
