Shija Hospitals unveils Itocha Block, boosting Manipur's advanced care

Shija Hospitals today marked a significant expansion of advanced healthcare services in Manipur with the inauguration of its new "Itocha Block" at the SJ Auditorium.
The facility aims to strengthen the region's medical ecosystem and provide accessible tertiary care to the local population.
The inaugural function was graced by dignitaries, including M Rajkumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West; Dr M Amuba Singh, Director, Shija Academy of Health Sciences; and Dr Palin Khundongbam, Chairman and Managing Director of Shija Hospitals.
Key Highlights of the New Block
Shija Eye Hospital: A central component of the new block is the award-winning, Japan-recognised 40-bed Shija Eye Hospital, one of the largest eye hospitals in North East India.
Established in 2008, the facility has five fully functional operating tables and approximately 50 caregivers, including nine eye specialists.
It offers specialised services in cataract, glaucoma, retina, oculoplasty, and paediatric ophthalmology.
As of December 2025, it had performed 9,404 free cataract surgeries and 138 comeal transplants.
Dialysis Unit II: The new block also features an expanded dialysis service, adding 40 new machines to support the existing 448 patients and approximately 150 daily sessions.
Shija Hospitals is a leader in renal care, having supported 124 kidney transplants, including the first deceased donor kidney transplant in North East India.
At the inaugural function, Dr Amuba announced that the Shija Academy of Health Sciences, the region's first homegrown private medical college, will soon add a 100-bed hospital and a second lecture hall to its campus.
Dr Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Director of Medical Services, explained that the Itocha Block is named in memory of the late Khundongbam Itocha, father of Dr Palin Khundongbam.
Dr Palin Khundongbam reaffirmed the institution's commitment to affordable, people-centred, and high-quality healthcare for the region.
The programme concluded with the felicitation of the various teams involved in the project and a vote of thanks by Dr Chetan Khundongbam, Joint Managing Director.
