Imphal, April 24 2025:
The government has approved the adoption of two central government Office Memorandums (OMs) concerning paid leave provisions, especially aimed at supporting working women.
The decision was taken in Thursday's sitting of the 'Governor-in-Council' .
According to a statement issued by finance commissioner N Ashok Kumar, the Council approved the adoption of office memorandum dated September 11, 2008, which introduced Child Care Leave (CCL) for women government employees, as well as single male employees with minor children.
Under this provision, a competent authority may grant up to 730 days of CCL during an employee's entire service to take care of up to two eldest surviving children.
The leave can be availed for various needs, including rearing or attending to the child's examination, illness, or other concerns.
The release highlighted that the recognition of dual roles, particularly for women employees as professionals and caregivers, is key to fulfilling constitutional mandates and ensuring gender equity in the workplace.
The second office memorandum dated September 2, 2022, concerns the grant of 60-day Special Maternity Leave (SML) in the case of stillbirth or death of a child soon after birth.
This leave is distinct from regular maternity leave and is aimed at supporting female government servants through the physical and emotional trauma resulting from such events, allowing affected employees time to recover without the added pressure of work or risk of losing income.
