Imphal, May 20 2026:
The Weights and Measures Department, Government of Manipur, observed World Metrology Day on Wednesday at its Directorate office in Lamphel under the theme 'Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making' .
Speaking at the programme, Commissioner, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, N Kheda Varta said the day commemorates May 20, 1875, when 17 nations signed the Metre Convention to adopt a standardised International System of Units.
He noted that weights and measures once varied across regions due to differences in gravity, temperature and weather, and the metre was later defined by the wavelength of light for uniformity.
Pointing to growing unethical practices in weighing and measuring, he stressed the need for public awareness on the mechanisms and instruments used by traders.
With digital and electronic devices, lasers for length, and precise medical instruments like thermometers and BP apparatus now in use, accuracy is essential, he said, adding that the department must keep pace with technological changes.
Controller, Weights and Measures, Yumnam Nelson said metrology is crucial for fair trade, consumer rights, accountability and transparency in governance, and informed policy-making.
The department implements the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011, which are indispensable to trade, health, agriculture, transport and other sectors.
Deputy Director Priya Nongmaithem said steps are being taken to rename the department as Legal Metrology.
Officials said World Metrology Day aims to spread awareness on accuracy standards set by bodies like the International Organisation of Standardization and the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures.
