State joins National Surgeon Day 2025 observance

Ahead of the observance of National Surgeon Day 2025, around 30 patients received free surgery under the banner of 'One Surgeon, one free surgery' during the observance of the Surgeons' Week, Association of Surgeons of India, Manipur State Chapter chairman Prof N Somorjit stated.
The National Surgeon Day 2025 was jointly organised by the Association of Surgeons of India, Manipur State Chapter and Indian Medical Association (IMA) Manipur Branch at the hall of IMA in Lamphel on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Somorjit highlighted that purpose for the observance is to spread awareness through various activities.
During the weeklong observance from June 8 to 14, surgical solutions were provided to patients from other district with poor financial conditions or are located far away.
In addition, blood donation camps were organised to address the suffering of the patients and help them recover speedily.
A continuing education programme was also organised to allow surgeons to share their knowledge and improve their skills, he added.
Prof Somorjit continued that there is a need for surgeons to be fit, while ensuring regular master health checkups for all members.
In this, Babina Diagnostic Hospital managing director Dr Dhabali extended his help.
As part of the observance, a blood donation camp was also organised wherein the Surgeon members donated blood.
A total of 30 surgeries have been performed under the "One surgeon, One free surgery' scheme, he conveyed, noting that surgeons earned their title or become specialists after years of hard work and intense training.
Dr Somorjit then said that the number of state-sponsored surgeons in training was lower compared to privately funded MBBS students.
With passage of time, the number of medical colleges has risen and numerous rules and regulations relaxed.
As such, there are a total of over 140 surgeons.
Around 20 are yet to be enrolled as surgeons and the total number of surgeons now stand over 200, compared to the mere 20-30 surgeons in the early 1970s, he informed, adding that if the number of surgeons increase in the state, all necessary surgical facilities would soon be easy to access.
The observance was also attended by ASI Manipur State chapter founder chairman Ng Bijoy Singh as chief guest, IMA president Dr Simson Sareo, and ASI, MSC secretary Dr Dhanabir Thangjam as members on the dais.
