A seven-day training programme on scientific beekeeping on oilseed crops was inaugurated on Thursday at the conference hall of the District Horticulture Office, Hamleikhong, Ukhrul.
The programme was inaugurated by District Horticulture Officer Ukhrul, Rangsan Koireng.
Highlighting the objectives of the training, Koireng emphasized the crucial role of bees in human life, stating that the survival of human beings is closely linked to the existence of bees.
Resource person Dr Mathukmi Khamrang educated the farmers on scientific rearing of Apis Cerana, a species widely available in the district.

He also encouraged farmers to select bee varieties suited to the local climate and to plant more flowering trees to boost bee populations, adding that local Apis Cerana has high commercial value.
Another resource person, T Thotmaya, spoke in detail on the techniques of systematic management bees colony and extraction of honey.
He demonstrated the making of honey boxes and artificial feeding methods during dry season and rainy seasons for successful beekeeping, and also stressed the importance of selecting suitable wood for hive construction, as bees are highly sensitive.
The training programme is being organised by the Ukhrul District Horticulture Office under the Manipur Beekeeping and Honey Mission (MBHM), Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur, and is sponsored by National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
