Bamboos planted under NBM in 'poppy areas'

In the abundant hills of Senapati district, many have long been ensnared in the web of poppy cultivation - a practice that has brought with it a myriad of challenges.
The prevalence of this crop, while a source of quick income for some, has cast a shadow over the community, leading to a cascade of adverse effects that have rippled through the social fabric and the environment alike.
The environmental impact of poppy cultivation has been profound.
The slash-and-burn techniques often employed to clear land for poppy fields have led to deforestation, soil erosion, and a loss of biodiversity.

The delicate ecological balance of natural landscapes has been disrupted, threatening the very resources upon which the community depends for its survival.
Moreover, the social implications have been equally severe.
Considering these impacts on society, ecology and to boost economy, District Forest Department under National Bamboo Mission (NBM) has come up with a tangible solution to support the affected farmers who needed financial security, food security and above all rise above the looming poverty and raise the per capita income of the economy.
Bamboo, the fastest -growing woody plant on earth, renowned for its versatility, strength and eco-friendliness has been introduced as a crop to replace poppy on pilot basis.
Every part of bamboo gets utilised.
That is why, bamboo is aptly known as 'Poor-Man's Timber' and 'Timber of the 21st Century'.
The strength properties of bamboo are better than many timber species.
The circular and hollow cross-section of bamboo gives it a high strength to weight ratio.
It is elastic in comparison to wood.
It can be easily cut into required size and split-up into strips and other household tools.
Bamboo culms can be easily stored and transported.
The growth of bamboo is faster and matures within three-four years.
Six locations, namely, Makuilongdi, Kangjang Hill Range, Khabung Hill Range, Kazing Hill Range, Mao Pungdung and Kapao Hill Ranges of Senapati dis -trict are approved for such pilot run.
Bamboo rhizome plantation at Kapao Hill Range covering over 6 hectares has been successfully carried out by Senapati Forest Division along with CSOs and villagers.
Active participation and awareness about the ill effects of poppy on society, youth and mental health were deliberated upon during the plantation.
Senapati divisional forest officer Shanngam S, Karong RFO Lolee Leshiini Kriibve Mao, along with staff of Karong Range thanked the volunteers for their unending support to eradicate this cycle of illegality and dependency on poppy once and for all.
