Thoubal, January 22 2026:
A 15-day training programme on "Diversified Farming Systems for Enhancement of Livelihood & Food Security for Tribal Farmers of Chandel District", organised under the TSP (Tribal Sub-Plan ) programme concluded today at the Community Hall of Lamphoupasna village, Chandel.
On the concluding day, Dr Kangjam Sonamani Singh, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil & Water Conservation), delivered the main lectures, highlighting the importance of rainwater harvesting in homesteads and sustainable management of water resources.
He noted that water scarcity often forces fanners to remain idle after the paddy season, and stressed that availability of water for life-saving irrigation during critical phases of rabi crops can significantly enhance farm productivity, farmers' income and overall well-being.
Dr Sonamani also emphasised the need for farmers to remain alert to climate change impacts and regularly access weather forecasts, advisories and warnings issued by the agrometeorological unit of ICAR.
He explained that following climate-smart advisories helps minimise crop losses, particularly during flowering, ripening and pre-harvesting stages.
Dr Khumlo Levish, Nodal Officer, TSP Project, Chandel, urged farmers to adopt a holistic approach to promote sustainable agriculture in the district.
Dr A Ameeta Devi, Senior Scientist and Head, distributed participation certificates along with potato seeds to the farmers.
Ts Lavid Anal, SMS (Hort 2) and Ts Leenda Monsang, SMS (Plant Breeding) were also present during the programme.
