Students sensitised on SUP, its impacts

Directorate of Environment and Climate Change in collaboration with Srivan Higher Secondary School on Saturday conducted an awareness camp under the theme "Elimination of Single Use Plastics on School Campus", at the school's premises at Luwangsangbam in Imphal West district.
The programme was attended by Srivan Higher Secondary School principal I Usharani as the chief guest, teacher Dilipkumar as the president, environmentalist Ch Joykumar as guest of honour in the presence of other school staff.
Delivering the chief guest address, Usharani stated that the ban on single use plastics need to be implemented with primary focus on marketplaces where SUPs are used and disposed of in larger quantity, so as to achieve the intended goals.

While pointing out the extensive use of plastic in day-to-day life, the principal highlighted the need to understand the impact of long term use of single use plastics and urged for recycling and re-use of plastic products rather than unethical disposal.
Guest of honour environmentalist Ch Joykumar highlighted that ban on single use plastics has been implemented across the country after the central government issued an order in 2022.However the same has remained ineffective in the state until last four months when the state government re-issued the order, he added.
Highlighting the penalties for defying the ban on single use plastics, Joykumar informed that offenders could face a jail term of up to 5 years or a fine upto Rs 1 lakh.
