NSSO RO Imphal celebrates 75 years of National Sample Survey

The Regional Office of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, organised a grand function today to commemorate the 75th year of the National Sample Survey (NSS) in India.
The celebration held at Imphal Hotel was marked by enthusiastic participation from statisticians, academicians, students, and Government officials.
As per a release issued by Thongam Nilakanta Singh, Assistant Director, NSO Regional Office Imphal, the event featured a quiz competition aimed at spreading awareness about the NSS and its significant contributions to data-driven policymaking in India.
The event was graced by dignitaries, including Prof W Chandbabu Singh, Vice Chancellor, Dhanamanjuri University; Joseph Pauline Kamson, Secretary, Economics & Statistics, Government of Manipur; and Dr Manao Singh, Deputy Director General, NSO RO Imphal.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof Chandbabu lauded the NSS for its unwavering commitment to statistical excellence and evidence-based planning.
He emphasized the crucial role played by NSS in understanding the socioeconomic realities of the country and called upon the younger generation to take interest in statistics and data science to meaningfully contribute to the Nation's development.
Joseph Pauline Kamson spoke on the need for greater awareness and outreach of the NSS framework among the masses.
He appreciated the role of NSS surveys in bridging the information gap and shaping policy frameworks.
He also encouraged students to actively participate in such academic initiatives and develop an analytical factual rooted mindset in understanding.
Dr Manao Singh reflected on the journey of the NSS since its inception in 1950 and its evolution into one of the most respected survey mechanisms in the world.
He also highlighted key achievements and milestones, underscoring the commitment of NSO to integrity, transparency and statistical rigor.
Winners of the quiz contest in the order of merit are - Wahengbam Danial Singh and Jenia Nongthombam (Department of Economics, DM College of Arts); Elnagbam Premkumar and Laishram Naocha Meetei (Department of Statistics, Manipur University); and Debajit Langpoklakpam and Mainam Kareena Shah (Department of Statistics, Liberal College) .
The occasion served as a platform to reaffirm the value of statistics in governance and the importance of nurturing a culture of data literacy among citizens.
