Ukhrul Forest Division burns carcasses of seized wild birds

Ukhrul, December 17 2025:
The Ukhrul Division Forest Office on Wednesday disposed of carcasses of seized wild birds by setting them on fire in full public view at the Forest Office, Phungreitang in Ukhrul.
The disposal was carried out in the presence of Sub-Divisional Officer (SDC) Yurreikan Hungyo, Range Officers Sp Chairmisan and Siyo Kaping, along with staff of the Ukhrul Forest Division.
The action followed a directive issued by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Ukhrul, Kimneingah Kipgen, who ordered the disposal of the seized items under Section 50 (4) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 .
According to Range Officer Charmisan, all the seized wild birds belonged to avian species listed under Schedule I and II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 .
She said that the birds were seized from Ukhrul town during a routine checking drive conducted by the Forest Department.
The seized carcasses included Kalij Pheasant, Black-crested bulbul, blue-throated barbet, black bulbul, eyebrowed thrush, yellow-browed bulbul, cuckoo dove, grey-breasted Prinia, along with four unidentified bird species.
Charmisan further stated that killing, possession and trading of wild animals is strictly prohibited under the Indian Wildlife Act.
She added that the Forest Department is keeping a close vigil on such illegal activities and is making sustained efforts to sensitise the public about the importance of preserving flora and fauna.
