Imphal, December 02 2010: In a shocking incident today, two young cousins were brutally thrashed by a middle aged man in Bamdiar, under Nambol police station in Bishnupur district.

People of the locality rose up against the accused and rampaged his property.

The victims have been identified as Okram Tomnao(9) s/o O Ipi and Okram Ajit(11), s/o O Ahanjao of Bamdiar Mayai Leikai.

The accused has been identified as Heisnam Samananda(45), s/o H Niteshwor of Bamdiar Mamang Leikai.

According to sources, around 7:30 am today, Samananda took Tomnao and Ajit to the surrounding hillock, Machin Manao Hill, where the two minors were viciously attacked and thrashed with a stick apparently in an attempt to kill them.

Tomnao sustained serious injuries in the head and the back and remained unconscious, Ajit miraculously escaped with only bruises on his neck.

Tomnao was promptly rushed to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for treatment where he was reported to have seriously injured his head and back in the assault.

On learning of the incident, the people of the locality went to the accused to enquire reasons for the gross act.

Samananda replied that he had commited the act because the brothers were naughty and incorrigibly bad.

The irate mob then challenge him saying since the minor victims were not related to him by blood, he had no right to admonish them, much less thrash them with a stick.

Samananda remained conceited without a shred of regret.

The irate mob then rampaged his house destroying it partially before a Nambol police team led by T Meino Singh succeeded in quelling the mob.

According to a resident, O Thoicha Devi, Samananda moved into the locality in 2004 from Konthoujam after he was banished on a murder charged.

Since then he has been living with his father, H Niteshwar, who runs a yoga ashram in the locality.

She said that Samananda has a revolting animal like temperament and almost killed Ajit's father some 2 years ago but timely intervention by locals had saved him.

She further said that the fathers of the victims are brothers.

It is unfortunate that an event such as this has befallen on the family who struggles for one square meal a day.

It is very clear that the accused had intended to kill the minors.

She said that Samananda will not be allowed to live in the locality again.

Meanwhile, Nambol police station has arrested the accused and a case has been registered against him.
