Basic course on news reporting underway

Imphal, May 02 2011: A 15-day training progress on basic course in news reporting being organised under Department of Information & Public Relations has begun from today at Manipur Press Club along with participation by 29 trainees including a woman.

Inaugurating the training programme as chief guest, Minister of Information & Public Relations TN Haokip observed that importance of media is far reaching.

So, mediapersons should dedicate themselves to the profession.

If one is committed, lots of ideas would come automatically on which one can write about.

However, instead of just picking fault, it would be better on the part of mediapersons to write on developmental issues of the State.

Pointing out that mediapersons faced lots of difficulties in carrying out their duties at one time, Minister TN Haokip said that now mediapersons can exercise their freedom of speech and expression.

The Minister also appealed to the trainees for participation in the training course attentively.

Joint Director of IPR A Balkrishna, who presided over the function, explained that DIPR has been organising similar training course in news reporting for around 20 years.

Among the trainees who have participated in these courses, there are many who have taken up journalism as a profession successfully.

The main objective in organising the training programme is to ensure collective understanding of what is mass communication and how it is function.

During the course of the training, many senior journalists would be invited to present lecture and interact with the trainees, he added.

Retired AIR News editor S Mangi, who was one of the guests of honour of the inaugural function, suggested that the trainees should be allowed to witness the proceeding of the State Assembly at least for one day.

This would ensure proper reporting in the affairs of the Assembly and its proceeding.

Just as what big media houses located outside Manipur have been doing, there is the need for paying more attention to the development of media in Manipur, he noted.

Senior journalist AK Sanaton, who was also present and spoke at the occasion, said that mediapersons have been writing on various issues ranging from the problem of sweepers to the visit of Indian President and helping in dissemination of information to the people.

No mediaperson, even those who have studied Mass Communication, could be true to his/her professional calling without being hard working.

Freelance journalist Irengbam Arun, ISTV editor Y Rupachandra and Adl Director/Dy Secretary of IPR Kengoo Zuringla were also present at the occasion.
