Imphal, May 29 2025:
BJP Manipur Pradesh senior spokesperson M Asnikumar met Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday in New Delhi to discuss urgent infrastructure needs and the larger goal of sustainable peace and development in the state.
During the meeting at Gadkari's official residence, Asnikumar highlighted the long-standing connectivity issues affecting Thanga constituency and surrounding areas in Bishnupur, Imphal West, Kakching, and Thoubal districts.
He submitted a formal proposal seeking the expansion and upgrade of the Moirang-Thanga Road, construction of a new bridge over Loktak Lake connecting Mukap, Mandha, and Chingthi, and integration of the 37-km stretch into National Highway-2.He stressed that these steps would not only boost connectivity but also unlock economic opportunities through tourism and sustainable livelihoods, especially for youth and rural communities.
The proposal aims to position Thanga constituency, located in the culturally significant Moirang sub-division, as a hub for eco and heritage tourism.
The project aligns with the Act East Policy and seeks to enhance inter-state and sub-regional connectivity within Indo-Pacific trade corridors.
Asnikumar called for a holistic approach to infrastructure planning that supports regional integration and long-term growth.
The Union Minister responded positively, appreciated the strategic importance of the proposal, and directed officials to expedite its review and processing under the External Assistance Programme.
He assured full support from the Ministry for the initiative, recognising its potential to transform the region.
According to Asnikumar, the proposal had been guided and endorsed by the then chief minister of Manipur and the works minister.
The authority had initiated the preparatory work in January 2025, instructing the chief engineer to develop a concept note and Detailed Project Report (DPR).
Expressing gratitude following the meeting, Asnikumar said that the proposed project would be a "game-changer" for Thanga area by improving accessibility, encouraging tourism, and creating long-term economic prospects.
"This is not just an infrastructure project - it is a step towards healing, empowerment, and progress for our region," he said.
