Imphal, August 25 2025:
The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has urged the State Government to urgently address the acute shortage of manpower and infrastructure in healthcare and educational facilities at Karang Island.
DESAM president, Mayanglambam Somorjit Meetei, after inspecting the Primary Health Centre (PHC) and local schools in Karang, expressed serious concern over the lack of infrastructure and manpower.
He pointed out that the only PHC in the island is managed by a doctor who visits only two or three times a week, leaving villagers without essential medical care.
He stressed that the PHC must be equipped with adequate doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, and urged medical staff to stay at their assigned quarters and serve the people upholding professional ethics.

Highlighting the poor state of educational infrastructure, Somorjit said the Karang Upper Primary School, which has 70 students, is being run by two teachers.
He urged the authorities concerned to send adequate teachers and equip the school with necessary infrastructure.
He also called for the speedy completion of infrastructure at Karang Aided Junior High School so that it could be upgraded into a full-fledged High School from the next academic session.
Somorjit further criticized the ZEO and DI of Bishnupur district for neglecting Karang's education system for years and urged the authorities concerned for immediate action to fill the gaps.
The number of school dropouts at Karang is increasing at an alarming rate.
The authorities concerned must address the issues at the earliest, he said.
Secretary of Karang Meitei Development Organisation, Salam Bembem also appealed to the State Government to send adequate doctors, nurses and teachers to the island to ensure people's access to essential healthcare services, and quality education.
