Reject violence, uphold unity: TIM appeals

Imphal, April 24 2026:
The Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has expressed deep concern over the escalating Kuki-Naga violence in Manipur, which continues to threaten lives, disrupt communities, and undermine peace in the region.
TIM, in a statement, said it is particularly alarmed by the potential spread and further escalation of violence, as well as the growing risk faced by the Thadou community.
Due to frequent misidentification and geographic proximity to conflict zones, Thadou individuals and villages are increasingly vulnerable, often becoming unintended victims, it said.
In the wake of the recent killing of two civilians from the Tangkhul Naga community on Ukhrul Road, the situation has further deteriorated, with reports of retaliatory attacks, loss of lives, displacement of villagers, and heightened fear and tension across the State and beyond, TIM said.
Saying that such cycles of violence inflict long-term humanitarian and social consequences not only on the warring parties but also on all affected individuals and communities, further burdening the already fragile socio-economic fabric of Manipur shaped by past ethnic conflicts, it added that a repeat of the prolonged Kuki-Naga clashes of the 1990s would be unimaginable, especially at a time when Kuki-Meitei tensions, which have already caused devastating losses, continue to persist.
Thadou Inpi Manipur unequivocally condemns all forms of violence and calls for immediate restraint, it said.
TIM urged all parties involved to prioritise dialogue, mutual understanding, and non-violent means of conflict resolution.
TIM further appealed to both sides to refrain from targeting or involving the Thadou community in this conflict.
At the same time, TIM advised members of the Thadou community and Thadou villages to remain neutral, refrain from participating in any form of violence, and clearly identify themselves as Thadou to reduce the risk of misidentification.
It also appealed to all community members to maintain close communication with TIM for guidance and support during this critical time.
Thadou Inpi Manipur also expressed concern that authorities have not heeded warnings from Thadou bodies about the dangers of politicising ethnicity or community identity for narrow political gains by vested interests.
The continued failure of the Government to arrest perpetrators of recent killings while relying instead on public announcements of ex gratia compensation and vague assurances of justice that are rarely followed through reflects a breakdown of accountability, it said.
"This pattern not only undermines public trust but also deepens anger, fear, and suspicion among affected communities and is directly linked to the current situation," it said.
TIM also called upon civil society organisations, community leaders, and authorities to take urgent steps to de-escalate tensions and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
As one people in the multiethnic society of Manipur, all communities must live together in mutual respect and remain vigilant against any agenda that seeks to divide and destabilise society, it said.
