Thoubal, June 02 2026:
Students, parents and members of the School Management Committee (SMC) of Waikhong Government High School staged a protest demonstration at the school campustoday, demanding immediate intervention from the Government to address the acute shortage of teachers at the institution.
Despite having around 260 enrolled students, the school has been feeing a severe shortage of teaching staff, causing concern among students and parents over fie quality of education being imparted.
Speaking to the media persons during the protest, SMC president Samjetsabam Achou said that most residents of Waikhong and its surrounding areas belong to the Scheduled Caste community and come from economically weaker sections of society.
Despite their financial hardships, parents remain committed to ensuring quality education for their children, he added.
Achou stated that the school had struggled for many years but was gradually being revived through collective efforts of villagers and the SMC since the 2024-25 academic session.
He highlighted that in the recently declared High School Leaving Certificate Examination conducted by the BOSEM, seven out of nine students secured first and second divisions, while the remaining two students obtained compartmental results.
Achou, however, lamented that the school is currently functioning with only three primary teachers, while classes at the high school level are being managed by just two contractual teachers.
He further expressed concern over the transfer order issued against another teacher, which could further worsen the situation.
He further stated that to cope with the shortage, the SMC had even hired eight teachers using its own resources to ensure that students continue receiving education.
He appealed to the concerned authorities to urgently deploy adequate teaching staff in the interest of the students.
A student who participated in the protest said the school continues to face numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and lack of essential facilities.
However, she stressed that the shortage of teachers remained the most pressing concern.
She stated that the classes are frequently disrupted due to the shortage of teaching staff, adversely affecting students' learning and academic progress.
The student urged the government to immediately appoint adequate teachers and warned that students and parents would launch intensified forms of agitation if their demains remain unmet.
Meanwhile, a visit to the school by media personnel revealed poor infrastructural conditions.
The boys' toilet was found to be unusable and without doors, while the newly constructed building remains incomplete.
As a result, students are being forced to attend classes in dilapidated rooms with leaking roofs, damaged floors and dusty interiors, conditions that resemble an abandoned structure rather than a conductive learning environment.
