Imphal, April 01 2026:
A joint team of 18 members of the Manipur Loumi Lup, led by its Secretary H Ibobi Singh, visited Konaitong Maring village in Tengnoupal district and held an interaction with local villagers to promote improved agricultural practices aimed at enhancing farmers' livelihoods.
The team convened a discussion at the residence of VK Mopham, focusing on the cultivation of a new high-yielding variety of maize and the diversification of crops to boost income generation.
The initiative seeks to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable and profitable farming techniques suited to the region.
According to a press release issued by the organisation, the new maize variety was developed under the initiative of maize scientist Dr Dayananda of the Indian Coordinated Research Project at Central Agricultural University.
Highlighting its benefits, Secretary Ibobi Singh informed that a single plant of the new variety can yield five to six cobs, offering significantly higher returns to farmers.
During the visit, Ibobi Singh also lauded the villagers of Konaitong Maring village for maintaining lush green hill ranges through consistent cultivation of seasonal crops, ensuring selfsustainability. The organisation observed that the village's moderate climate - supports the growth of a wide variety of crops and fruits, thereby contributing to the economic stability of local farmers.
The team further appreciated the villagers' initiative to plant coffee as a means to preserve the greenery of the hills and promote long-term ecological balance.
The organisation also raised concern over the adverse environmental impact caused by poppy cultivation in certain hill areas, allegedly linked to Kuki narco-terrorist activities, which have led to deforestation and erratic weather patterns, including frequent flooding in the valley due to prolonged rainfall.
In contrast, the efforts of Konaitong Maring villagers in preserving forest cover and maintaining ecological balance throughout the year were highlighted as exemplary and deserving of recognition by the State government.
Members accompanying the team included N Loken Singh, Th Angou Singh, N Maniyaima.
Th Biren Singh, N Juge, Th Mohon Singh, and M Shyamkeshwor.
