Troops of Assam Rifles reportedly shot dead a suspected UG cadre during an encounter last night near Waithou Chiru village under Lilong Police Station in Thoubal district.
Quoting Assam Rifles source, police report said that the encounter took place between troops of 28 Assam Rifles and suspected armed UG cadres near Waithou Chiru village at around 12.30 am.
In the encounter, one UG suspect was killed while the rest escaped under cover of darkness.
Police have picked up the body and kept it at the mortuary of RIMS.
According to a statement issued by the PRO IGAR (South), following a special tip off on the presence of UG cadres in the general area of Waithou Chiru, the troops were approaching the troops were approaching towards a selected ambush site when they were fired upon by armed UG cadres.
The troops immediately retaliated and eliminated one of the UG cadres.
One 9 mm pistol, one live bullet, seven fired cartridges and one radio set have been recovered.
The body and the recovered items have been handed over to the Lilong Police Station, the PRO added.
However the local people of Khamnam Leirask, Imphal have accused the Assam Rifles troops of staging a fake encounter.
Identifying the slain man as Irengbam Gunindro, the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Gunindro claimed that he was taken away by some people in civvies who came in a Maruti 800 car on April 8 .
Eaven as a search for Gunindro was launched, the people received the news that he was killed in an encounter at Waithou Chiru, said the JAC.
Strongly condemning the act of the AR personnel, the JAC has demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident as well ex-gratia of at least Rs 10 lakh and a Governbment to a kin of the late man.
Until and unless the Government announces its decision, the body of Gunindro would not be claimed, asserted the JAC.
Meanwhile, the identity of the slain UG suspect has been established as Irengbam Gunindro alias Mono (30) s/o late Tolpishak of Tera Khamnam Leirak.
According to family members, Gunindro had been picked up some unidentified persons who came in a Maruti from near the road turning of Cachar Road Athletic Association at around 4.30 pm yesterday.
The body has not been claimed by the family members.
