Imphal, April 09 2010:
An overview of the academic activities in Manipur University in the last three years indicated that the university was making remarkable academic progress, claimed Vice-Chancellor Prof C Amuba.
The Vice-Chancellor was speaking at the University-Pubic Interface function held at Dr Kamal Indoor Stadium today in connection with the closure of Man Fete organised by MIMS Department since April 7 .
Notwithstanding the volatile law and order situation of Manipur and some other minor problems that cropped up within the university from time to time, academic activities could be carried on quite smoothly.
Established in 1980, Manipur University was converted into a central university in 2005 .
MU had only seven academic buildings and 121 teachers when it was under the State Government.
But after it was converted into a central university, 13 more academic buildings have been constructed.
Now the strength of the teaching staff has reached 167, said Prof Amuba.
Against hostel accommodation capacity of 350 students and 45 numbers of staff quarters during its days under the Government of Manipur, MU today has 80 staff quarters and the hostel capacity raised to 600.Moreover, the number of students who cleared NET and received JRF has been steadily increasing year after year, claimed the Vice-Chancellor.
Many more departments such as Dance, Integrated Biotechnology, Physical Education and Sports Science, Mass Communication have been opened in MU, said Amuba.
The function was also attended by MP Dr T Meinya.
He emphasised on the importance of organising such events like Man Fete which would enable young students to expose their talents in myriad fields.
