A young footballer of SAI was brutally assaulted last night at Ghari under Lamphel Police Station of Imphal West district.
According to police, the victim identified as Wahengbam Chiranjit alias Nanao (21) s/o Dhananjoy of Ghari Awang Leikai was beaten up severely by some unidentified persons at Changangei Ucheckon at around 11 pm yesterday.
Chiranjit is a footballer in SAI.
Three youths who are allegedly involved in the attack have surrendered to Patsoi Police Station and the police have summoned the family members of the three accused youths.
The three youths suffered youths have been identified as Sorokhaibam Ethoi (21) s/o Sanaton, Thongam Benen (20) s/o Babu and Pungsungbam Bishorjit (20) s/o late Rajen.
The houses of the three accused and surrendered youths have been ransacked by the enraged local people today morning.
Meanwhile, information culled from the site of the incident said that last night Chiranjit had gone along with eight other friends to attend a Thabal Chongba programme at Changangei Ucheckon.
Near the programme venue, Chiranjit came across Ethoi, Binen and Bishorjit ( the three youths who have surrendered to the police) engaging in a fight with another group of young men and went to stop the fight.
After resolving the matter, all of them returned together.
However, on the way, seven of them left to see a Shumang Leela while Chiranjit went ahead along with another neighbouring friend identified as Wahengbam Rocky (21) .
As they came along, Ethoi, Binen and Bishorjit stopped them near RK Restaurant, which is little far away from the site of the Thabal Chongba programme and assaulted both of them with sticks and clubs.
After Rocky informed the family members about Chiranjit who suffered severe injuries on his left shoulder and head, he was rushed to Raj Polyclinic in a Van for treatment.
Police have reportedly recovered an iron rod and a wooden club from the site of the incident.
When the news of the assault spread, infuriated local residents attacked and destroyed the houses of the three accused youths.
