Imphal, April 09 2010:
A major fire that broke out at Lilong market on NH-39 in Thoubal district in the wee hours of Friday destroyed at least 13 shops which reduced properties worth crores of rupees into ashes.
It took about five fire tenders nearly two hours to douse the fire that reportedly started from explosion of a LPG gas cylinder at a hotel that was among the gutted shops.
No human casualty reported in the fired burnt incident that took place at about 3 am.
Police and fired service officials estimated the total lost property of 13 shops at Rs 2.5 crore as most of the shops deals with hardware, electronics items.
Gutted shops belong to Md Hajijur, Md Karimuddin, Md Amin, Md Zakir, Md Inao, Md Sharit, Md Islauddin, md Amjad, Md Khomei, Md Iqbal, Md Allauddin and Md Riyajuddin.
Eyewitness accounts said that no sooner had a loud sound of explosion hear, fire started burning with high flame and burnt down the entire contents of the affected shops.
