Imphal, April 09 2010:
Like in past years, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) will organise Realisation Day on April 17 .
AMSU Secretary General Md Alamgir in a press conference held in this regard at AMSU headquarters said that the day would be observed in remembrance of the sacrifices made by AMSU functionaries namely, Potsangbam Lukhoi (Premananda) and Huidrom Loken in the 'Go Back Foreigners' movement in 1980 .
He further said that the day would also be observed to realise the economic, social, cultural and political effects of the influx of non-locals in the State.
Saying that the main function would be held at Pishum, the Secretary General said that people would march towards the students' memorial at Pishum Chingamacha in the form of a rally from three different locals to pay floral tributes and take part in the observance.
Md Alamgir said that people coming from Thoubal district would gather at Kakwa Bazar and rally towards Pishum, while people from Bishnupur and Imphal districts would assemble at Kwakeithel Bazar to march towards the students memorial.
The rally for Imphal East denizens would start from Moirangkhom, he added.
After the gathering pay tribute at the students' memorial, a public meeting would be organised at Pishum ground where a voluntary blood donation camp would also be conducted.
An open painting competition on the effects of influx of non-locals would also be organised at Manipur College in connection with the observance, Md Alamgir said.
Maintaining that influx of non-locals have become a big problem in the State, he said that there are more than 5000 non-local voters in the Thangmeiband A/C alone.
He also said that one can also see sizable number of non-locals in interior areas like Serou and Sugnu.
Md Alamgir cautioned that like in Tripura, non-locals may even take over the power in State Government if proper measures are not taken up in time.
According to 2001 census, he informed, total population of indigenous State tribals is 6,70,782 while the population of non-locals is 7,40,488 .
Maintaining that the State now has 3,06633 non-local voters, Md Alamgir also demanded for implementation of the agreement inked between All Manipur Students' Union and State Government in 1980 and 1994 .
