Thoubal, July 24 2025:
Joint Action Committee (JAC) - formed in connection with the alleged assault and extortion of a truck driver and handymen by a Manipur police mobile team near Jiribam - has demanded justice, threatening to launch agitations if the authorities fail to act by July 29.Addressing a press meet at Lilong Keithel on Thursday, JAC convenor Md Helaluddin said the incident occurred on July 1 when a truck carrying scrap materials was stopped near the Leingangpokpi police outpost under Jiribam police station.
The driver and handyman were allegedly beaten and detained by the police mobile team, while a large quantity of goods went missing from the vehicle.
Helaluddin stated that the scrap-laden vehicle, owned by Hafiz Mateen and Sons based in Lilong Keithel, was operating legally with a Government of India licence.
He alleged that the mobile team demanded Rs 5 lakh and later released the two victims the following evening after Rs 1 lakh was paid through a person identified as Bablu, a VDF jawan, who was reportedly part of the police team.
After their release, the truck was driven to its unloading destination, where the driver discovered that around 700 kg of scrap materials, valued at approximately Rs 7 lakh, had gone missing.
The firm subsequently lodged a complaint with the Governor and DGP, demanding strict action against the personnel involved, but no response has been received so far.
Helaluddin said that the JAC had submitted fresh memorandums to the Governor and DGP reiterating their demand for justice.
He warned that if no positive response is received by July 29, the JAC, in collaboration with CSOs, will launch various forms of agitation from the following day.
