Imphal, March 23 2025:
A joint meeting was convened on Sunday, between the Union of Treatment and Rehabilitation of Users for Social Transformation (U-TRUST), ANJUMAN, Kanglei Panas, and elders of Lilong area to discuss the closure of New Life Solution Rehabilitation Centre, Lilong, by the Thoubal district administration.
The centre was shut down for gross violation of guidelines laid down by the Department of Social Welfare and for conducting unethical drives against drug users in Lilong area.
According to a joint statement issued by the three organisations, the meeting took strong exception to a recent incident where a middle-aged person from Lilong Arapti was abducted and assaulted on Saturday, by the members of New Life Solution Rehabilitation Centre.
The members allegedly misused the names of ANJUMAN, Moulana, and Kanglei Panas to justify their actions.
The meeting welcomed the prompt action of the Social Welfare Department in closing down the centre and appealed to the department to take similar stringent action against other rehabilitation centres indulging in malpractices and human rights violations.
It was unanimously resolved that New Life Solution Rehabilitation Centre, Lilong, shall not be allowed to reopen or operate without the consent of U-TRUST, ANJUMAN, and Kanglei Panas.
The meeting further resolved that appropriate legal action would be initiated against any groups, organisations, or rehabilitation centres, or their collusion, that perpetrate crimes against drug users in the name of drug treatment in and around Lilong area.
The participants also resolved to work together in the future to bring about a healthy and ethical drug response.
The meeting emphasised the importance of ensuring that rehabilitation efforts are conducted in a lawful and humane manner, safeguarding the rights and dignity of drug users.
