Thoubal, May 17 2026:
A special exhibition showcasing the historic Khangabok Keiphal Loukol coin hoards recovered in 1984 was held on Sunday at BH Manithoi Shanna Mandop, Khangabok Makha Leikai.
The exhibition was organised by the Book Club, Khangabok, along with the release of the second volume (2026 edition) of the annual multilingual journal "Khongchat: The Khangabok Diary".
The function was attended by Mutua Bahadur, Director of Mutua Museum and custodian of the 1984 Khangabok coin hoards, as chief guest, while Principal of Wangjing College Prof Khundrakpam Jugindro Singh presided over the programme.
Khundrakpam Menjor Mangang, founder of MMRC and Unity Park; Khundrakpam Ongbi Swamalata Devi, former Adhyaksha of Thoubal Zilla Parishad; and Moirangthem Madhusudan Singh, secretary of District Olympic Association, Thoubal and vice-president of Kho-Kho Federation of India, attended the event as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Mutua Bahadur recalled that around 2,300 ancient coins were recovered from Khangabok Keiphal Loukol in July 1984, which remains the highest number of ancient coins ever recovered in Manipur.
He expressed happiness that an exhibition on the historic coin hoards was organised in the village after four decades.
Mutua Bahadur further stated that coins in Manipur carried inscriptions in Meitei Mayek script until the reign of Meidingu Khagemba, after which Devanagari script began appearing on coins.
He added that the Indian coin system came into force after Manipur merged with the Indian Union.
Highlighting the importance of preserving history, he stressed the need to trace and document Manipur's historical heritage, stating that such ancient artefacts would remain valuable assets for future generations.
He urged the public to preserve historical findings and valuables for posterity.
