Ukhrul, May 16 2026:
Human rights activist Hungyohung Hungyo launched a scathing attack on the Government of India's (GoI) silence on persistent "Kuki terrorists activities jeopardising the safety of the Naga people" especially the Tangkhul community in the hill districts of Manipur.
He voiced his thoughts during a legal awareness programme jointly organised by Discussion Forum Ukhrul (DFU) and All Hunphun Tangs Association (AHTA) on Anti-Terrorists Act held today at Awontang Community Hall, Ukhrul.
Addressing the gathering, the rights activist elaborated on anti-terrorist laws enacted by the Government such as the Terrorist & Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act 1985, 1987, 1997, Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), 2002, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) etc to curb terrorists activities in the country.
However, these laws have failed to protect and safeguard the citizens of hill districts, he noted.
Stating that India is a signatory to the Joint Working Groups on Counter-Terrorism (JWG-CT), he accused the GoI of being insincere and engaging in double standards.
When terrorists attacked Pahalgam in 2025, India swiftly responded with a surgical strike.
But here in Manipur, Nagas, particularly the Tangkhul community, has been suffering from repeated attacks of Kuki militants since February 7, ' alleged Hungyohung Hungyo.
Meanwhile, resource person Daniel Ramson, Senior Advocate, Manipur High Court enlightened the gathering on how to safeguard their rights through legal procedures while elaborating on the Village Authority Act, 1956 .
He urged the VAs of the community to familiarise themselves with the Act, so as to be aware of their rights and powers provided by the Constitution.
Co-Convener of DFU LM Thanmi was also present at the programme.
