Flash flood hits Rungchang village, Chakpikarong

Chakpikarong, October 10 2015 : Rungchang village, Chakpikarong was hit by flash floods on Friday midnight by the swelling waters from the Pamtuyang River flowing from the southern side of Chakpiakrong.

It may be mentioned that on Friday the makeshift bridge over Chakpi River was swept away by flood waters.

It has been reported that the flood was caused by strong currents of Duhan River which swept down logs, woods and uprooted even trees besides inundating several areas.

The debris swept away by the flood water got stuck and piled up at the old abandoned RCC tera bridge in Rungchang blocking free passage of the river.

This is the second time Rungchang village was hit by flash flood.

On July 31 last, another flood caused widespread damage when the waters inundated many village areas including CHC, Chakpikarong high school, playground and mini-indoor stadium.

The affected areas were yet to be reconstructed or repaired.

According to Rungchang resident NL Lunhring, the villagers were warned by 29 Assam Rifles officers SK Shetri, 2nd i/c and Major Rajendra Singh of the impending danger.

Rungchang Village Authority; Anal Students Union Chakpikarong Branch; Anal Naga Tangpi and Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) have strongly condemned the District Administration and the responsible authority for its apathy towards the affected people of Chakpikarong.

They alleged that the district administration and the Government failed to build a suitable bridge in the area after the RCC Bridge located in the heart of Chakpikarong Bazar collapsed on July 31 last.

The civil society organisations expressed dismay with the Chandel Administration for failing to respond to the demands for dismantling the old Tera Bridge which was responsible for causing havoc to Rungchang villagers for the second time.

While expressing disappointment over the inaction of the District Administration for not conducting an on the spot enquiry, the organisations have once again appealed the Government to replace the old tera bridge at Ruwngchang village in order to avert an impending catastrophe.
