Imphal, May 10 2026:
A one-day awareness programme on "Forest Fire Prevention and Conservation of Wildlife" was held on Saturday at Khongbal Tangkhul village under the initiative of the Sawombung Range, Central Forest Division.
The programme was organised with the objective of creating awareness among the public on the importance of protecting forests and preserving wildlife from the growing threat of forest fires.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Central Forest Division, Vikram Nadhe, IFS; Range Forest Officer of Sawombung, David Athokpam; CRPF E-30 Assistant Commandant Ajay Shanna; and Khongbal Tangkhul village headman Mathankhui Zimik attended the event as presidium members.
Speaking at the programme, DFO Vikram Nadhe highlighted the serious impact of recurring forest fires on: biodiversity and the ecosystem.
He stated that frequent forest fires could lead to the extinction of several rare flora and fauna species that are found nowhere else in the world.
He further pointed out that many valuable medicinal plants are also at risk of disappearing permanently if forests continue to be destroyed by fire.
Once lost, such species can never be restored on earth, he added.
The DFO also stressed that the survival of both humans and wildlife is closely linked with the protection of forests and natural resources.
Stating that the Forest Department alone cannot protect the environment, he called upon the public to take collective responsibility in preventing forest fires and conserving wildlife for future generations.
