Thoubal, January 09 2026:
Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Inner Manipur, Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, on Friday asserted that he would continue to work tirelessly for the welfare of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the State, stating that he still has three and a half years remaining in his tenure as an MP.
"Let them say whatever they want and criticize whatever they want.
I still have three and a half years left as an MP, and I will continue to work to my full potential for the welfare of the IDPs and the State," Dr Bimol said while addressing his reception ceremony held at Khekman Zilla Keithel, Thoubal.
The programme was organised by the Khekman Development Committee.
Expressing deep concern over the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, the MP said despite the deployment of around 30,000 personnel of the Indian Army's Division II, several companies of the Border Security Force (BSF), and nearly 40,000 State security personnel, people continue to be displaced and forced to take shelter at relief camps.
He questioned the effectiveness of the prevailing security arrangements in the State.
Dr Bimol described the present situation in Manipur as extremely critical, comparing it to a shattered glass fixed within a frame.
"From the outside it may appear intact, but in reality the State has been broken into pieces," he said, stressing that the situation cannot be taken lightly and calling upon the people to remain cautious and work harder during this critical time.
He further alleged that certain political parties and individuals have been diverting attention from the real core issues facing the State.
He questioned whether the actual core issues - such as displacement due to burning of houses during the conflict, loss of lives, and the suffering of affected families are being adequately highlighted and addressed by the authorities.
Raising concern over the imposition of buffer zones in the State, Dr Bimol questioned under which law or authority such zones were created.
He informed that an RTI application has been filed on the matter and asserted that he would continue to pursue the issue legally, by filing PIL, once responses are received.
He also claimed that despite his efforts to raise these issues as an MP, he has faced personal threats from certain Kuki organisations for speaking out against the buffer zones.
Stating that some individuals in the valley may mock him, Dr Bimol said he remains undeterred and committed to serving the interests of the people.
The reception ceremony was attended by several dignitaries and intellectuals, including retired Head Pandit Y Goura, Leishangthem Anganghal, Khekman Lai Haraoba Committee, Lai Selungba Th Maimu, and other prominent figures of Khekman village.
