Imphal, May 04 2025:
In clear violation of the restrictions announced by the government authorities, suspected cadres of Kuki militant groups were seen in combat uniforms and armed at the May 3 observance of "Inevitable Separation Day" in Churachandpur district.
Video clips widely shared on social media platforms show dozens of men in camouflage attire brandishing firearms approaching the event venue at the Wall of Remembrance in Tuibong, Churachandpur.
Several uniformed state police personnel can also be seen in the video, but making no attempt to intervene or enforce restrictions.
Photos and videos of the main event shared by several Kuki X users also show armed men in combat camouflage dress giving gun salute at the main venue.
The gathering had received official permission from the district magistrate on May 2, granted to K Lalbiaksanga and Ginza Vualzong of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), the main organiser of the event with strict conditions.
These included prohibition on carrying any type of weapons including wearing camouflage or combat dress, and raising inflammatory slogans or banners.
The permit also stated that any breach would lead to cancellation of the event without prior notice.
Despite these terms, armed cadres, some with partially covered faces, were openly present.
Observers noted the use of hunting firearms, possibly as an attempt to avoid harsher scrutiny while still projecting a militant presence.
Though there is no confirmation whether the armed meh were cadres of militant groups bound by SoO, their participation contradicts the SoO ground rules, which require cadres to stay confined to designated camps and avoid public mobilisation, particularly when armed.
While there is no official report of any action being initiated in connection with the Churachandpur incident, a separate but similar event in Kangpokpi district has drawn police attention.
Authorities confirmed that an FIR was registered following a gun salute held at Saikul on Saturday.
Raids have since been conducted in multiple areas, resulting in the seizure of five single-barrel guns and camouflage clothing.
Police said local leaders and elders have been summoned for questioning, and that operations are ongoing to arrest the individuals involved and recover remaining weapons.
