Imphal, April 24 2026:
The deteriorating condition of the suspension bridge in the Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency over the Iril River, combined with delays in the construction of a bailey bridge in the area, has caused significant inconvenience to the local residents.
The suspension bridge, which connects areas such as Bamon Kampu and Kalika, is in a poor state, with several planks and sections of iron missing, making it hazardous for use.
Speaking to the media, Sapam Inaobi, chairman of the Pureiromba Youths Club (PYC), stated that the Government hasn't repaired the suspension bridge for over five years.
He also said that the local residents have taken it upon themselves to repair the bridge multiple times by pooling their resources as they heavily rely on it to access their paddy fields and for other daily activities.
Saying that students cross the bridge daily to wait for their school vans, Inaobi urged the State Government to repair the suspension bridge as a matter of urgency.
He also noted that the construction of a 170 feet long bailey bridge in the area under PMGSY has come to a halt after two pillars were completed.
A board at the foot of the bridge clearly states that the construction of the bailey bridge was supposed to be completed by 2022, with a maintenance period extended until 2027, he said and added that the project, however, has come to a standstill, even though the maintenance period is now approaching its end.
Inaobi stated that local residents have raised their grievances to the State Government on several occasions, but no tangible action has been taken so far.
He urged the State Government to prioritise the repair of the suspension bridge and complete the construction of the bailey bridge as soon as possible.
