Imphal, May 23 2026:
The Central Forest Division, Manipur, has undertaken a Miyawaki plantation initiative during 2025-26 in Compartment No 2 of Langol Reserve Forest, Lamdeng Block under Sadar West Range, to restore degraded forest land through high-density scientific afforestation.
A total of 10,000 saplings were planted using the Miyawaki method developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki.
Unlike conventional models, the technique involves planting three to four native saplings per square metre with enriched soil, promoting faster vertical growth and stronger roots.
The plantation mimics a natural forest with multiple layers.
Top canopy species include Terminalia myriocarpa, Gmelina arborea, and Parkia species, while the middle canopy has Syzygium cumini and Citrus limon.
Herbs, shrubs, and climbers were also added for ecological balance.
Within a year, saplings have shown vigorous growth with a satisfactory survival rate and steady canopy development.
Continuous monitoring and good soil health have supported progress.
Divisional Forest Officer Vikram Suresh Nadhe said the site is developing into a dense green patch expected to boost biodiversity, improve microclimate, and enhance ecological stability.
The initiative aligns with the "Greening Imphal" vision, strengthening the city's image as an eco-friendly tourist destination by creating serene natural spaces near urban areas.
