Awareness on Bear Conservation conducted in Tamenglong

Tamenglong, July 06 2025:
A one-day awareness programme on forest protection with a special focus on "Bear Conservation" was held today at Phelong, Tousem Range, Tamenglong.
The event organised by the Tamenglong Forest Division was attended by Joel Gangmei, RFO Tamenglong, A Promeshwor Singh, RFO Tousem, Meiruthai Panmei, member, Manipur Wildlife Board and Withuing Inchangta, secretary Phelong Village Authority as resource persons and presidium members.
About sixty villagers from Phelong village participated in the program.
The aim of the awareness programme was to educate the public about the different bear species found in India, their ecological roles, the threats they face, and the importance of their conservation.
During the programme, resource persons spoke on the topics of rescue, care, and rehabilitation of orphaned or injured bears, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into the wild.
Speakers also emphasised the need to involve local communities in conservation efforts, encouraging them to become "Bear Guardians", and fostering peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Recently, two Himalayan black bear cubs rescued from Kadi village by DC Tamenglong Angshim Dangshawa were handed over to Manipur Zoological Garden by DFO Tamenglong Kharibam Hitler Singh and RFO Tamenglong Joel Gangmei.
It may be noted that the Himalayan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus laniger) is listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 .
