CAU colleges launch 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' to promote soil health

As part of the month-long nationwide 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' launched by Union Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan on June 1, two constituent colleges of Central Agricultural University, Imphal rolled out awareness initiatives to promote sustainable farming and soil conservation.
The College of Agriculture, Iroisemba flagged off the campaign at its adopted Satellite Village, Maklang with an awareness programme on 'Soil health management'.
Chaired by Dean Prof K Nandini Devi, the event saw participation from faculty, farmers, and villagers.
Dr N Surbala Devi spoke on maintaining soil health through soil test-based fertilizer application, vermicompost, and organic amendments.
Dr L Devarishi Sharma highlighted the role of biofertilizers in enhancing soil fertility, boosting crop productivity, and cutting dependence on chemical fertilizers.
Speakers stressed adopting eco-friendly practices to conserve soil, improve farm income, and ensure long-term productivity.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks from Prof Th Renuka Devi and a collective pledge by participants to advance soil conservation under the Abhiyan.
Separately, the College of Food Technology, CAU.
Imphal launched the campaign on June 1 under the supervision of Dean Prof Ng Iboyaima Singh.
Coordinated by Prof Ng Joykumar Singh, the event drew 45 farmers from across the State.
Prof Joykumar urged farmers to reduce excessive chemical fertilizer use and safeguard soil health to ensure long-term food security.
Both programmes form part of the national drive to encourage organic inputs, protect farmland, and build sustainable agriculture practices.
