Flood relief : Cabinet seeks special package

Imphal, August 28 2015 : After deliberating minutely on the reports of damages done by floods in the last week of July across the State, the State Cabinet has decided to seek a special package from the Centre to compensate at least partially for the losses suffered by the people of the State.

The Cabinet meeting held this evening at the Chief Minister's Secretariat was chaired by Chief Minister O Ibobi.

Speaking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Government spokesman M Okendro informed that a flood damage report submitted by PWD was studied at length during the Cabinet meeting.

Chakpikarong bridge as well as many key bridges of Thoubal and Chandel districts were swept away by surging flood waters.

The cabinet meeting decided to forward the same flood damage report to the Centre with an appeal to provide a special package so as to compensate the losses to some extent.

It also agreed to extend the age of superannuation of doctors working under Manipur Health Services (MHS) from 60 to 62 in view of the acute shortage of specialist doctors in the State.

The combined strength of Specialist Grade, Grade I, Grade II, Grade III and Grade IV doctors working under MHS is 2203.But only 1130 doctors are currently in service.

Altogether 1073 posts are lying vacant, said Okendro.

On the average, around 45 doctors retire from service every year.

As the State is already facing shortage of doctors, the Government finds it hard to fill up the posts of doctors who have retired.

In view of these facts, the State Cabinet decided to extend the age of superannuation of doctors working under MHS from 60 to 62.The age of superannuation of doctors is 62 in Odisha and West Bengal too whereas it is 65 in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh.

Further, the Cabinet meeting decided to create of 43 posts of Assistant Election Supervisor (AES) in order to strengthen the State Election Department.

Moreover, the State Cabinet has given its consent to recommend additional posts with regard to the ongoing direct recruitment process for 12 posts of AES, Okendro added.
