Imphal, June 21 2025:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that forming a popular Government in Manipur would be challenging until the differences between the Meitei and Kuki communities are resolved.
His statement comes amid ongoing discussions about Government formation in the State, which has been under President's Rule since February 13, following the resignation of the former Chief Minister on February 9.In an interview with The Times of India, the Union Home Minister said that the situation in Manipur is not one of terrorism or an anti-National issue but is related to ethnic tensions.
He stated that India shares an open border with Myanmar, and when Myanmar faced instability, infiltration began.
He also claimed that the Manipur High Court order on Meetei demands for Scheduled Tribe (ST) triggered a spark.
"We need to keep in mind that in all the previous cases of ethnic violence in Manipur, the situation could be stabilised only after three-four years," he said.
Claiming that there is no atmosphere of violence now, he added that the rift between the two communities (Meiteis and Kukis) has not been healed.
Amit Shah further said that the Government is discussing the situation in Manipur at a political level and is hopeful of a success soon.
"We are seeking to bring about reconciliation; we invited them separately and then asked them together, and now we are discussing this at the political level.
We are hopeful of success soon," Amit Shah said.
On asked when an elected Govt will likely be restored, Amit Shah responded that forming a popular Government in Manipur would be challenging until the differences between the Meitei and Kuki communities are resolved.
