Illegal blood traders' rounded up

Volunteers of Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) apprehended two individuals who allegedly are illicit blood traders today.
The two alleged illegal blood sellers identified as Tongbram Ranabir alias Ranbir, s/o T Mani of Lalambung Makhong Naosekpam Leikai and Laishram Rebananda, s/o of L Mala of Kwakeithel Laishram Leikai were presented before the media during a press briefing held at KSA office at Khuyathong today.
KSA general secretary, Sanjoy Khunlakpam said that various organizations have been organizing blood donation camps and raising awareness about voluntary blood donation to meet the growing demand for blood transfusions.
Expressing concern over the emergence of illegal blood traders, he urged the relevant authorities to take strict action against those involved in the illicit trade.
According to Sanjoy, Ranabir revealed that RIMS staff and security guards, including technicians and attendants paid him Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,500 per blood donor and he, in turn, paid Rs 2,500 to the person who brought the donor.
He further claimed that Ranabir had been involved in the illegal blood trade for around 20 years.
Moreover, it has also come to light that some donors were donating blood as frequently as twice or thrice a month, he alleged, emphasising that blood donation requires a minimum gap of three months and a mandatory health check-up.
Sanjoy claimed that Rebananda is involved in supplying blood donors, having supplied around 20 donors so far, and earns Rs 2,500 per donor.
He asserted that RIMS authorities cannot evade responsibility in this matter.
Saying that the Ranabir and Rebananda will be handed over to police to initiate legal actions, he urged the RIMS authorities to take action against their staff and security guards involved in the illicit trade.
