DESAM bans dubious BEd centres

Imphal, July 07 2012: Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) today declared ban on the functioning of some BEd training institutions on the charge that these centres are yet to get recognition stamp.

speaking to media persons at its Keishampat head office today, DESAM vice president M angamba claimed that based on specific information DESAM teams fanned out to different locations for spot inspection.

During such campaign it came to light that some BEd centres attached to local educational institutions were operating with affiliation to Shillong-based CMJ University, said Angamba who identified Friends English School (Minuthong), Douglas Memorial School (Churachandpur), Martin Grammar School (Thoubal), Mount Everest College (Senapati), Ukhrul Central School, Diligent Public School (Bishnupur) and Eastern Shine English School (Moreh) as the centres where BEd classes were being conducted.

Pointing out that National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is the only authority to grant recognition to BEd centres, he also claimed that Rs 30,000 was found to have been collected from each student as admission fee.

Further contending that a former Deputy Secretary in the Board of Secondary Education (Manipur) namely S Mangi Singh had collected the fee amount from 200 candidates in his capacity as one of the academic councillors of CMJ University Study Centre in Manipur, Angamba maintained that the fees were collected with the assurance that the study centres would get recognition from NCTE.

The BEd classes are conducted on Sundays and holidays with the faculty members drawn from DM College and Directorate of Education (S), he also informed that the students applied for admission based on newspaper advertisements.

The DESAM inspection teams also realised that application form submission commenced from October/November 2011 while the BEd classes began from January this year, the DESAM vice president informed and clarified that pursuing BEd courses at recognised study centres should be the norm.

The DESAM also banned an unrecognised BEd training centre set-up at Thoubal Nongangkhong with immediate effect, according to Angamba.
