Students join hands to up NRC demand

Imphal, October 19 2023: As many as six student organisations have resolved to intensify the movement to update National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the context of Manipur and resist every challenge which threatens the State's integrity head on.

The joint meeting organised by six student organisations viz MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, AIMS and another organisation under the theme "Eikhoigee Tunglamchat Kallasi" at Khuman Lampak was attended by thousands of students.

At least nine resolutions were taken during the meeting.

Firstly, the students resolved to play their part in eliminating narco-terrorism from the soil of Manipur and in safeguarding the future of the indigenous people.

The students, in its second resolution, agreed to intensify the movement to implement NRC in Manipur to identify and deport the illegal immigrants settling in the State.

Further, the gathering resolved to promote unity among the indigenous people and protect the State's integrity.

The fifth resolution said that the students will resist every challenge which threatens the unity and integrity of Manipur.

The meeting also agreed to put up a collective fight against drug and narco-chemical warfare to secure the future of the students while the seventh resolution resolved to stand unitedly against any form of excesses against the students be it by security forces or groups.

Moreover, the gathering agreed to do whatever they can to prevent closure of educational institutions every now and then to build human resources and knowledge capital.

The last two resolutions agreed to work on building unity among the students and to contribute in improving the socio-economy of the State.

The students paid fitting tributes to every Manipuri who got killed while fighting to safeguard Manipur by observing two-minute silence in their honour.

Retd Professor of Department of History, Manipur University N Joykumar, Associate Professor of Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) Manipur University Dr Thiyam Bharat, Associate Professor of Department of Political Science, Dhanamanjuri University Dr Arambam Noni and functionaries of different student organisations also attended the meeting.

At the meeting, DESAM president Leishangthem Lamyanba said that the meeting was organised to let the students understand the chronic issues of the State.

Saying that the prevailing situation in Manipur is unprecedented, he added that a befitting response must be given to the current challenge which poses a grave threat to the survival of the indigenous people.

Retired Professor N Joykumar, on the other hand, expressed desire for the people to understand the history of Manipur.

"We must understand our past to secure our future," he said and added that the current crisis in Manipur will also become a history.

Saying that Manipur has a recorded history spanning over thousands of years, Joykumar said that students must use education as a weapon if they want to do something for the State.

Every person will encounter failure unavoidably at some point but the same shouldn't be the reason for the younger generations to become defeated, he advised.

He reiterated that education is the most effective weapon which can change how people perceive things and the world.
