Abducted youth rescued, 8 arrested

Even as Imphal West police arrested at least eight cadres of KCP (People's War Group) along with arms and ammunitions from Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai who held a student captive and deman-ded ransom, a combined team of Imphal West commando, 5/9 Gorkha Regiment and 129 Battalion of CRPF recovered a large cache of guns and ammunition from Ngairambam Maning Loukol.
Both the incidents took place today.
Briefing media persons at his office today, Imphal West SP Shivakanta said that they received a complaint about abduction of one Laishram Chinglen Singh (22) who was staying at the boys' hostel of DM College of Science by unknown miscreants yesterday at around 1.30 pm.
The complaint was lod-ged by the father of the abducted person Laishram Shyamchand of Ngaikhong Siphai.

Denying the charges of the police, a large number of womenfolk gathered in front of Imphal police station and demanded release of the arrested persons.
They claimed the cadres were innocent.
Reportedly, the complainant received a call from his son's mobile number and asked them (he and his wife) to arrange Rs 15 lakh and come to Hiyangthang Kamakhya Pemton College by 3 pm for the exchange.
The kidnappers threatened to kill the student if the money was not arranged , as per the SP.
Saying that the Imphal West police started probing the case after they received the complaint and rescued the student at around 2 am today from Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai, Shivankanta added that the kidnappers were also arrested from the locality after carrying out a massive search operation.
As per the SP, the kidnappers have been identified as Khwairakpam Rajen Singh (24), s/o (L) Kh Thoibi Singh of Chura-chandpur Khuga Tampak, Sukham James Singh (23), s/o S Chaothoi Singh of Churachandpur Singhat, Moirangthem Amarjit Singh (25), s/o M Bokul Singh of Moirang Tronglaobi, Taorem Rohit Singh (23), s/o T Naocha Singh of Moirang Lamkhai, Kakyenpaibam Hemjit Singh (21), s/o (L) K Manglem of Ngairangbam, Sandam Romen Singh (36), s/o (L) S Rajen of Samurou Makha Leikai, Khangembam Dayananada Singh (23), s/o Kh Nilamani of Lilong Haoreibi Awang Leikai and Sarungbam Umananda (34), s/o S Raja of Lilong Chajing Haoreibi.
Arms and ammunition including one Ghatak rifle along with one magazine and 10 live rounds, one AK-47 rifle with one magazine and six live rounds, one .32 pistol with one magazine and six live rounds, thirteen mobile handsets, one sword (samurai), one red Honda Civic car and one white Maruti Swift car were recovered from their possession, said Shivakanta.
The SP further stated that Sarungbam Umananda is the commander of the group and he is working under Lamyanba Khuman.
The 8 arrested have been sent to police custody for 8 days.
Meanwhile, a combined team of security forces recovered a number of arms and ammunition from Ngairangbam Maning Loukol near a canal under Patsoi police station during a house to house search operation.
Around 300 houses were searched and 1000 individuals including women verified during the operation but no one was arrested.
The recovered arms and ammunition included one SMG 9 mm carbine with magazine, one 9mm pistol with magazine, one country made pistol, four 36 HE hand grenades along with two detonators, four chinese hand grenades, one tear gas grenade, one stun grenade, one live 84 mm illumination shell, four shotgun shell and two 12 bore live cartridges.
The recovered arms and ammunition have been handed over to Patsoi police station.
