Joshi's empty promises draws flak from Dy CM Gaikhangam

Imphal, May 25 2015 : Launching an attack on the BJP, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam on Monday flayed the saffron party-led NDA Government at the Centre for stripping of the special category status and a slew of public schemes from the North East.

Addressing a blessing programme held for INC candidates from Ukhrul district Autonomous District Council, Gaikhangam, who is also the president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), said that the BJP is not practically focusing on bringing about development for the North East.

"The BJP Government has cheated the people of the North East because it is doing only lip service to bring about development for the region.

The Centre has already carted off all development schemes as well as the special category status," the MPCC chief said at the event held at Mantripukhri here.

He said the Act East Policy has turned into a "Kill East Policy" by the Narendra Modi headed BJP Government.

Gaikhangam said that the ADC polls were conducted in the State after a gap of almost two decades by the Congress Government using its all-out efforts.

He stated that the people have started to politically understand the importance of ADC polls.

The Deputy CM stated, "We're witnessing threats and intimidation from certain quarters in the poll process.

A number of INC candidates are still under threat" .

But he lauded all party candidates who are preparing to join the fray against such threats.

Gaikhangam made it clear that there is no place for violence in elections and that seeking votes by threatening them is never a right move in a democratic set up.

"Enforcing gun culture in election is very unfortunate.

Several Congress workers have been killed.

Such violent activities must be stopped," he said.

The MPP leader added that several Congress ministers had not been able to field party candidates from their respective constituencies for the ensuing ADC polls because of threat and intimidation.

He disclosed that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has taken serious note of such failures on the part of the ministers concerned.

But INC candidates are fighting the polls from all 24 seats in Ukhrul district, he added.

Gaikhangam was confident of winning at least 18 seats from Ukhrul in the polls to be held on June 1 .

Deputy Speaker MK Preshow Shimray was also present at the programme.
