Moirang, December 24 2025:
With the aim of preserving the remaining stem of the iconic Sambanlei Sekpil topiary and creating awareness among the public about its historic achievement of entering the Guinness World Records in 1999, a museum titled H2H (Hedge to Heaven) was inaugurated today at Kumbi, with a special reception ceremony held in honour of noted social activist and peace cyclist Malem Thongam.
The event was attended by social activist and Peace and Normalcy Cycle Rally cyclist Malem Thongam; retired Vice-Principal of Kumbi College and advisor of Sambanlei Sekpil School, Khangembam Gyanibushan Singh; owner of Guiness World Record Sambanlei Sekpil, Moirangthem Okendro Kumbi; and retired lecturer and Principal of Sambanlei Sekpil School, Nongmaithem Ibohal, who graced the occasion as presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, Malem Thongam stated that nowhere in the world has such a tall topiary ever been grown, and the achievement of Sambanlei Sekpil had brought international recognition and pride to Manipur.
Although the topiary has since withered, she lauded the initiative to establish the museum as a significant step towards educating future generations about its historical and cultural importance.
She further shared that her recent cycling journey from New Delhi to Imphal was undertaken with the objective of restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur and amplifying the voices of the people to the government as part of the first phase of her campaign.
She added that she would continue to appeal to the Government of India, and if her voice remained unheard, a second phase of the cycle rally titled "Cycling for Manipur Peace" would be organised both within the country and abroad, seeking public support for peace and normalcy in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Moirangthem Okendro said that the Guinness World Record was achieved through years of perseverance and hard work.
He noted that although the topiary could have grown even taller, certain circumstances and challenges led to demotivation.
To preserve the legacy, he said, the museum has been established to house the dried stem of the record-holding topiary, along with memorabilia and documents related to its historic achievement.
The programme concluded with cultural performances presented by students of Sambanlei Sekpil School.
