Thoubal, January 09 2026:
Residents of five localities in the Waithou area have warned of intensifying their agitation if the concerned authorities fail to assure water connections under the Waithou Water Supply Scheme by January 15 .
The warning was issued by WEYA Club, Waithou secretary Naorem Abothoi during a press conference held on Friday at Waithou, organised by the Waithou Apunba Meira Paibi.
He said that the Augmentation Water Supply Scheme at Waithou Pat, constructed under the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), after its completion and functioning, had provided water connections to nearby villages and several other localities.
However, the continued failure to extend water supply to five localities of Waithou Leikai has caused serious concern and resentment among the residents.
He said that following a public meeting convened by the affected localities, several resolutions were adopted and a memorandum was submitted to the Governor, the Chief Secretary, and other concerned authorities, demanding immediate provision of water connections.
As no concrete steps were taken by the audiorities, residents locked the gate of the water supply facility as a form of protest.
According to Abothoi, after the protest, PHED Thoubal officials initiated talks with the localities.
Discussions were held with the Executive Engineer of the department on various issues, but the talks failed to reach any positive conclusion.
A second meeting was scheduled for January 7 with the participation of MLA Keisham Meghachandra, Deputy Commissioner Thoubal Hannah Kahmei, and the Chief Engineer of the PHED.
However, the meeting could not be held as the transfer order of the Deputy Commissioner was issued a day prior to the scheduled meeting.
Condemning the act of breaking the lock of the water supply gate and resuming pumping without any resolution, Abothoi termed the move as "most unfortunate" and strongly condemned it.
He warned that if the concerned authorities foil to give a clear assurance to provide water connections to file five localities by January 15, residents will intensify their agitation from January 16 onwards.
He further cautioned that in the absence of any settlement, any individual attempting to act against the restrictions imposed by the localities would have to bear the consequences at their own risk.
