Gun attack on Mala : Licensed gun seized, 10 days police remand for accused

Thoubal, May 06 2013: Md Basir Ahmad of Lilong Tarahei, a police constable attached to the Narcotics Cell of Imphal West, who was arrested in connection with life attempt on Lisham Mala, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Thoubal on May 4 at Thoubal Haokha, has been remanded to police custody for 10 days after being produced in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate of Thoubal today.

Along with his i10 car, the licensed gun used by Md Basir Ahmad in the attack has also been seized by the police.

Meanwhile, condemning the gun attack on Mala, members of various CWCs of the State have demanded proper investigation into the case and also to frame charge sheet against the culprit at the earliest possible.

Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Kinderson, Chairperson, CWC of Tamenglong stated that the gun attack on Mala was very unfortunate and those involved in the act should be given befitting punishment in accordance to the law of the land.

He further observed that it is very unfortunate that a number of police personnel in the State are involving in various crimes.

While highlighting the need to institute and implement Police Reforms Act in the State, Kinderson maintained the Police department should be cleansed thoroughly.

"Police personnel who are normally portray as guardian of the people have totally changed in the State with many of them involved in some crimes or the other.

Today, people are afraid of the police and run away at the very sight of their approaching.

So, there is an urgent need to make the Police Department more people friendly", he said, adding that the State Government should also see to it that no such incidents ever happen again.

Apart from Mala herself, K Pradeep Kumar, Chairperson, CWC of Imphal East; Pishak, Chairperson of CWC, Bishnupur; Nonibala, Convenor of Women in Governance; Maharabi, ex-member of CWC, Bishnupur and Bidyarani, Chairperson of CWC, Imphal West were also present on the occasion.

On the other hand, demanding appropriate action against the police constable who tried to kill Mala Lisham, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, Thoubal on May 4, a large number of protestors today stormed Thoubal Police Station.

Earlier, the protestors under the aegis of JAC Against the Murder Attempt on Mala Lisham staged a sit-in-protest at Haokha Maning Leikai Community Hall.

Talking to mediapersons on the sideline of the protest demonstration, JAC Convener Pebam Indira said that the life attempt on a person who works for the welfare of children should not be taken lightly.

It is a threat against the woman community as a whole.

The JAC would not remain quiet until the culprit is given befitting punishments.

Later, the protestors stormed Thoubal Police Station.

However, the situation was brought under control after SDPO K Meghachandra told the protestors that the culprit is now in police custody and interrogation is underway.
