Imphal, August 29 2025:
A team of the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC), led by its Acting Chairperson Kangjam Khagendra Singh and Secretary Haobam Rosita Devi, today inspected the Old Aged (Destitute Women) Home at Phayeng Kharang, Lamshang, Imphal Westdistrict.
The Home is managed by the Manipur Schedule Caste Welfare Association (MASCWA) and funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
As per a release issued by MHRC, the inspection revealed that the Home currently accommodates 25 elderly women, aged between 60 and 80 years, most of them hailing from Phayeng area.
A total of 10 staff members- four women and six men are engaged in running the institution.
During the interaction, inmates disclosed that although 18 out of 25 beneficiaries earlier received old-age pension, none are receiving it at present.
They stated that applications for resumption of pension benefits have been submitted but no action has been taken so far.
On the healthcare front, the team found that 16 inmates are covered under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) and the Chief Minister's Health Scheme (CMST), while the remaining have applied for the benefit and are awaiting approval.
The MHRC team noted the concerns raised by the residents, particularly the denial of old-age pension, and assured that the matter will be taken up with the relevant authorities to ensure that the rights and entitlements of the elderly women are protected.
The inspection was carried out as a part of MHRC's ongoing efforts to monitor welfare institutions across the State and ensure compliance with human rights and social justice mandates.
